Tanning Advice

Tan gradually, tan safely.

Before tanning it is important to consider your skin type and to build your tan gradually. Here is some general guidance to help you tan safely.

The two sides of the debate

Against: exposure to ultraviolet light is a primary cause of skin cancer, and therefore any unnecessary exposure increases that risk.

In favour: some argue the primary risk factor is severe sunburn during childhood and adolescence rather than controlled, moderate adult UV exposure, and that a gradual base tan may help prepare skin for stronger sun exposure. Whatever your view, moderation and care are key.

Know your skin type

Consider your skin type before you begin — it affects how easily you burn and how you should build your tan.

  • Type 1 (approx. 2%): Very fair skin, reddish hair — highly prone to burning.
  • Type 2 (approx. 12%): Light skin, blonde to medium-brown hair — strong tendency to burn.
  • Type 3 (approx. 78%): Normal skin, dark-blonde to brown hair — moderate tendency to burn.
  • Type 4 (approx. 8%): Light-brown to olive skin, dark features — slight tendency to burn.
